The vagus nerve may be the key to long COVID relief.
The symptoms of long COVID, also called chronic COVID or long-haul COVID, can linger for weeks and months – or longer. Research suggests that the coronavirus itself may have damaged the very part of your nervous system that is responsible for recovery, and damage could be linked to the effects of the coronavirus on a vital nerve, the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve can be disrupted by viral infections, excessive stress, disease, inflammation, and certain medications, among other things. If you’re suffering from long COVID, rehabilitation of this nerve is essential to helping your body function properly.
What is the vagus nerve?
The vagus nerve, also known as cranial nerve ten, runs from the brainstem through the neck and thorax to the abdomen. It’s responsible for controlling heart rate, breathing, speech, swallowing, taste, digestion, mood, immune response, and inflammation response. The vagus nerves are the main nerves of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the “rest-and-digest” system and takes you out of the “fight-or-flight” or stressed state of your body.
At Functional Medicine Center of MN, we have specific tools to measure the health, integrity, and function of the vagus nerve and the ability of the vagus system to work. Dr. Robert DeYoung, DC, QNCP is the only doctor certified in Quantum Neurology in MN, a specific technique that rehabilitates nerves, including the vagus nerve.
